Ultra Low Carb Update

Well, on my fifth day in, it finally happened. I knew it would. I was tired. I was super “hangry.” My body hurt and I fell hard. Yes. I fell face first, smack dab into a large size of steaming hot, deliciously salty and sweet McDonald’s french fries. There. I said it. Am I sorry it happened? Yes, but I did learn something-I’ll get to that in a bit.

When someone tells me McDonald’s fries are bad for me…

On to some good news…

I lost 3 pounds! Woot! That makes a total of 4 pounds. When I used to follow low calorie diets, it would take me a literally a month to lose 4 pounds. Now, I know my recent detour to Fryland may halt this lovely downward progress, but that’s life. The important thing here is that I know from a weight loss perspective, the ultra low carb diet is working. My body is happier and while weight loss isn’t my MAIN goal, it is certainly still needed and excellent progress.

In addition, we had several fun things out this weekend-a 30th birthday party at a bar and our monthly Euchre group got together. I did remarkably well. I discovered the best low carb widely available beer is Michelob Ultra at just a bit over 2 net carbs and had the super human strength to say no to the most delicious looking bakery cupcakes. Yes. Super human.

What have I learned?

Sadly, McDonald’s is bad. I mean, very, very bad for your blood sugar. Fries are bad, very, very bad for the ultra low carb diet. However, that being said, my blood sugar actually did what a normal person’s sugar should do- that is, it went up when it was supposed to and didn’t take a major nosedive into shakey hangry low blood sugar land. So that’s good. But, it did stay higher than it was supposed to be, for longer than it was supposed to be. So that’s not good. But it does show promise that I can maintain some level of control with diet. Yeah! I’m all for looking at the bright side of things, so I’m going to take the positive view of my latest leap of the low carb bandwagon and call it a great lesson.

Here are the numbers

Not terrible, but not optimal either…

Fasting is still high- this range being 103-113

McDonald’s foray… 2 hours postprandial 143 🙁 Bad.

3 hours postprandial 141 🙁 Still Bad.

Weight loss total : -4 Awesome!

Coming up…I’m testing different ultra low carb apps for tracking. I’ll let you know which are good, which are a waste, and if you should even bother…
