Self Care Sunday: Yoga

Self Care Sunday: Yoga

Self Care Sunday, but on a Monday

I know, I know. Sorry for the total lateness of this week’s installment of Self Care Sunday. We had a crazy busy weekend filled with soccer tournaments and fall fun. Before I knew it, the weekend just got away from me. So, today, we are talking yoga.

Benefits of Yoga

This week, we are focusing on using yoga to care for our body and soul. Yoga doesn’t have to be scary or intimidating. Studies show that doing gentle yoga, several times a week, can help ease pain, decrease stress, and even promote weight loss.

Tips for Getting Started with Yoga

  • After starting yoga for a solid two weeks now, I can assure you, it is definitely doable. Take your time, protect your joints, and start slow. I found that sometimes, doing the full 20-30 minutes was too hard on my hand, wrists, and feet so I broke it up into 5 minute segments. I would do a little, take a break, and come back to it.
  • Mix it up- There were some days when I made sure to do my yoga in a quiet, calm, and relaxed atmosphere (like after the kiddos were in bed) and other times the kids and I did it together. They loved trying something new and I enjoyed seeing how much fun they had while getting fit.
  • Be comfortable- Make sure when you decide to do yoga, you are wearing comfy clothes. You don’t have to go out and buy new yoga pants or special gear to get started. Some old sweats and a tee will work just fine. However, I will suggest finding a tee that is more fitted than too big. I did get a bit tangled up in my shirt one day while wearing a tee that was much too large. I think the kids are still laughing about that day….
  • Just do it- Don’t overwhelm yourself with doing everything exactly perfect. If you need a break, take one. Relax and focus on your breathing. Enjoy the calm.

Here is a great video I found on the You Tube to help you get started with Hatha Yoga. In my opinion, Hatha is the best place to start as it is meant to be “gentle” without too much craziness or pretzel like poses.
